TUTOR: Bronwyn Mason

Saturday October 19th: 10.00am - 12.30pm

Kurinuki is a Japanese word meaning ‘to hollow out’. This is a technique that involves carving a vessel from a single block of clay. Hollowing out clay in this way is a slow, meditative process that produces truly unique, one-of-a-kind ceramics.

With kurinuki we are aiming to make something that is spontaneous and ‘alive’, showing the marks of its maker. This technique involves minimal tools!

We will begin by shaping a solid block of clay, and making our chosen marks on the exterior, before carving out the inside to create the interior of your cup or small bowl. Your piece will be finished with a simple glaze.

Kurinuki is a delightfully accessible way to experience clay and is a satisfying introduction for anyone new to ceramics, while also providing a fresh challenge for more experienced makers.
